What is a good home treatment for a bed bug infestation?

An effective home treatment for a bed bug infestation involves thoroughly vacuuming the areas suspected of harboring bed bugs, such as carpet, upholstery, furniture and beds. Lightly sprinkle food grade diatomaceous earth on the affected areas. The diatomaceous earth continues killing bugs for months.

In the event of a bed bug infestation, thoroughly wash all bed linens, curtains and clothing in hot water, and dry them on the highest heat setting of the dryer. After vacuuming the affected areas, be sure to immediately dispose of the vacuum bag or empty the vacuum canister in a garbage can outside. Encase the bed in a fabric bed bug encasement to guard against further infestations.
