Hummingbirds favor daylilies, columbines, cardinal flowers and penstemons, reports Birds & Blooms, and they also seek bee balms, hibiscus flowers, peonies and coral bells. All of these plants are red, the color most attractive to hummingbirds.
Daylilies develop in the summer and attract many hummingbirds, and they can grow up to 4 feet tall. Columbines grow from 1 to 3 feet high and are frequently two-toned in both red and white. Cardinal flowers grow well in both full sunlight and partial shade. Penstemons are trumpet-shaped and well-scented, attracting hummingbirds. Newer varieties of bee balms can be purple, white or pink, but their usual color is red.
