Plants that are good for patio gardens include zinnias, Russian sage, marigolds, petunias and begonias. These are colorful perennials that do well in the containers that are usually placed around patios. Succulents such as agave and living stones are also good to plant around patios.

Besides plants chosen for their long life, ease of care and color, plants should also be chosen for their fragrance and their size at maturity. Plants that grow to enormous size, such as some species of bamboo or elephant ears, can overwhelm a small space. Plants that are spiny, thorny or prickly should also be avoided if their prickles cannot be removed, as should plants that are poisonous, such as datura and oleander.
