Emily Brontë, author of "Wuthering Heights," wrote a poem called "Love and Friendship" that compares friendship with love and argues that the former is more beautiful than the latter because of its faithfulness. Similarly, Robert Frost's "A Time to Talk" portrays the importance of a friend's visit in concise language.

Other poems use the occasion of friendship's end to examine the concept. For example, Alfred Lord Tennyson's "In Memoriam" consists of a number of poems that mourn the death of his friend. Poem 116, for example, expresses the hope that the friendship Alfred and Arthur Henry Hallam had will continue at some point in the future.
