Elkhorn Creek, Glade Creek, the Elk River, the South Branch of the Potomac River and Spruce Knob Lake are good trout fishing locations in West Virginia. The state has many streams, rivers and lakes that contain native brook trout as well as state-stocked rainbow, golden and brown trout.
The West Virginia Department of Natural Resources runs a large stocking program that releases trout into dozens of fisheries in the state during spring and fall stocking seasons. Fly fishing with waders is a common method of catching trout in West Virginia, but anglers must keep a watchful eye out for poisonous timber rattlesnakes and copperheads that commonly inhabit stream banks throughout the state.
