What are some good types of grass to grow in the shade?

St. Augustine, red fescue and Chewings fescue grow especially well in shady areas, according to Lowe's. However, no type of grass will grow in deep shade conditions. These types of grasses will grow in less sunny spots, but still need a minimal amount of sunlight to stay healthy.
There are two types of grass: cool season and warm season. Cool season grasses like the red and Chewings fescue should be planted in the fall. Warm season grasses such as St. Augustine should be planted in the spring. Both types of grass should be watered thoroughly and often to promote growth, and using a nitrogen-based fertilizer will help the grass grow strong and healthy, notes Lowe's.
