Does Google own YouTube?

As of 2014, YouTube is an official subsidiary of Google. Prior to being purchased by the much larger corporate entity of Google, YouTube operated as an independent limited liability company.

Google owns YouTube and has recently incorporated the video hosting site into its Google Plus social media platform. YouTube was rapidly gaining popularity when the search giant acquired the company for a whopping $1.65 billion in 2006, making YouTube's original founders very wealthy indeed. By all accounts, the acquisition has been a successful one for Google with YouTube showing no signs of slowing as a popular video hosting site. Offshoots such as Vevo allow entertainment corporations to host video sites for major artists like Beyonce. YouTube has also been involved in events such as presidential debates and live concerts since it was acquired by Google.
