Gourmet chefs are sometimes referred to as executive or head chefs. They may specialize in ethnic cuisine, such as French or Asian.
Gourmet chefs take classes in knife skills, food safety nutrition, menu development and food presentation. Classes are offered at many colleges around the country or at schools specializing in the culinary arts.
Jobs in the culinary field are plentiful and the average salary for a chef is $42,480, as of May of 2012.
