Is gout a variety of arthritis?

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis that causes a sudden and severe onset of symptoms such as pain, swelling and tenderness, notes the Arthritis Foundation. Gout commonly affects the joint of the big toe but can affect other areas, including the feet, hands and wrists.

Gout can affect the soft tissues and tendons as well, although it is not as common, according to the Arthritis Foundation. Normally gout only affects one joint at a time, but it can become a chronic condition over time. When gout becomes a chronic condition, it can cause lumps to form under the skin and cause impaired kidney function.
