What was the government of ancient Olympia?

Ancient Olympia had no form of government as it was not a city, but a religious site and sanctuary. It was the location of the first Olympic festival, a religious gathering dedicated to Zeus, the supreme deity of the Olympic gods.
The Olympic site represented a union of classic Pan-Hellenic political entities throughout the Peloponnesian peninsula. Each participating city-state maintained a treasury at the site to fund the temples and hold the Olympic festival every four summers. Athletic contests were held for foot races, wrestling, boxing, equestrian events and the pentathlon, which combined jumping, running, wrestling with javelin and discus throwing.
