The Treasury Department maintains a list of the yearly totals for the U.S. national debt, also known as the deficit, on its website treasurydirect.gov. As of June 2015, the Treasury Department records list annual debt totals from 1790 to 2014.
The Treasury Department also maintains a database of public debt totals listed by day and month, with data from January 1993 to June 2015, as of June 2015. The national debt represents the amount of government spending that exceeds government income, plus the debt and interest from any previous years that has not yet been repaid. This debt exists in the form of bonds and notes issued by the Treasury Department.
