The Emergency Unemployment Compensation Program, created on June 30, 2008 during the 2008 global economic recession, provided federal unemployment income to long-term jobless people who had exhausted state unemployment benefits. The program was extended in 2012 to last through the end of 2013, when it expired.
As Congress did not extend the program further, 1.3 million unemployed Americans lost benefits at the beginning of 2014, while a further 850,000 lost compensation in the first quarter of that year. The amount given to people in this program depended on the base wages or annual income of the last job they held.
