The birthdate of the U.S. Marine Corp is Nov. 10, 1775. The Marines were established by the Continental Congress to augment the Navy during the Revolutionary War.

The Marine Corp became a permanent branch of the Navy on July 11, 1798. This date was celebrated as the birth of the Marines until 1921, when Nov. 10, 1775 gained official recognition. The first recruiting headquarters for the Marines was located in the Tun Tavern in Philadelphia. Captain Samuel Nicholas was the first commissioned officer in the Marines, and is recognized as being the first commandant. The Marines have been engaged in every war fought by the United States.
