What does pro bono mean?

Pro bono comes from the Latin "pro bono publico," meaning "for the public good." It is generally used to refer to legal services provided free of charge, but can be applied to other services as well.

The American Bar Association recommends members provide at least 50 hours of pro bono service annually. Pro bono lawyers work with disadvantaged individuals who do not have the means to pay for their own legal help. In some cases, pro bono lawyers also partner with non-profit organizations to provide free legal counsel. According to LawGuru.com, individuals who cannot afford a lawyer may either elect to have a court designate one for them or approach an attorney for pro bono counsel on their own.
