What are senatorial races?

Senatorial races are political elections determining which individuals make up the U.S. Senate. A senate term is six years, and one-third of the senate is elected every two years. After six years are up, the incumbent senator may run for re-election.

The United States Constitution requires each state to elect two senators to serve in office. Therefore, the Senate is composed of 100 members. Senatorial candidates must be at least 30 years old and be a resident of the state in which they are running. The number of majority and minority party candidates elected into office vary. The number of senators representing a particular party is subject to change if there is a sudden death or resignation.
