Students in grades three, six and nine take the EQAO. It is used to assess students’ literacy in reading and writing, and math skills, and it's administered every year between May and June as of 2015.

The primary division, or grades one through three, and junior division, or grades four through six, exams cover reading, writing and math. The ninth grade exam only tests math skills. Each exam measures whether students meet the minimum standards set for each subject area. The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test measures student competence in all subjects through the end of ninth grade. All students must pass this exam to earn their diploma.
