What is the Greek national costume called?

The Greek national costume is called a Foustanella, which consists of a shirt, skirt and vest, along with a sash or belt worn around the waist. It is worn by men only and is unique in that, traditionally, both warriors and diplomats wore the costume.

A Foustanella is also the term for the white skirt that is worn as part of the costume. It is made with 400 pleats to symbolize the years where the Ottomans ruled Greece. The vest is known as a "fermeli." It has fabric in the back of maroon, black or blue that symbolizes the wearer's rank in the military. The shirt that is worn with the Foustanella is white and has a full sleeve, and the sash or belt around the waist is called a "selachi."
