Where do grizzly bears typically live?

Grizzly bears typically live in forests, woodlands and prairies. They thrive in parts of the United States such as the Rocky Mountains in Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park, the alpine meadows and mountains in Alaska and northern Canada, and the prairie in Montana.

Grizzly bears also range throughout Northern Europe and Asia. During the summer, grizzlies forage for food. For instance, the bears that inhabit Alaska gather at falls and rivers where salmon swim upstream to spawn. During winter, they dig dens in mountains and hillsides for hibernation. Because their habitats have harsh winters, grizzly bears depend on the fat stores that they gained during the summer to hibernate.
