Is groin pain a symptom of an inguinal hernia?

Groin pain or discomfort is a symptom of an inguinal hernia, according to WebMD. Many hernias do not cause pain at all, however. Other symptoms include a bulge in the groin or scrotum and increased discomfort when bending or lifting.

If the hernia becomes strangulated, or trapped, sudden pain can occur, which is often accompanied by nausea and vomiting, states WebMD. Less common symptoms of a hernia include swelling, tugging, heaviness or burning in the area of the hernia, scrotum or inner thigh and discomfort or aching that can be relieved by lying down. These symptoms typically appear as the hernia grows larger.
