What group of small islands forms the long tail of Alaska?

The Aleutian Islands are the group of small islands that form the long tail of Alaska. They are the reason that Alaska is considered the state farthest to the east of any state in the nation. Part of the Aleutian Islands extends over the 180 degree meridian.

According to Reference.com, this island chain stretches approximately 1,200 miles from the Alaskan Peninsula into the Eastern Hemisphere. There are four major groups of these volcanic islands: the Fox Islands, Andreanof Islands, Rat Islands and Near Islands. The terrain is quite rugged, and most of the population engage in hunting and fishing to make a living. The islands divide the Bering Sea to the north from the Pacific Ocean to the south.
