The traditional dress of the Roma or gypsy culture differs between women and men; women traditionally wear full skirts to their ankles tied at the left side, and men wear suits with a neckerchief called a “diklo.†Men's costumes cover a wide spectrum, as there is no set traditional garb.
The Roma people originated in India, and migrated through Persia to Eastern and Western Europe over 1000 years ago. Women normally wear a low-cut blouse, gold jewelry and headdresses decorated with coins as a sign of prosperity and generosity towards others. Formal occasions are marked by opulent costumes and contests for the biggest and most extravagant wedding dress.
