Hair dye dates back to the Egyptians in 3400 B.C., when henna was used to cover up gray hair. A Roman doctor named Galen came up with a recipe for black hair dye in 100 A.D., which was tested and proved to be effective in 2006.
In 1870, women began using hydrogen peroxide to devoid their hair of its natural color. This was nearly 40 years before London chemist William Henry Perkin invented the first synthetic hair dye in 1907. The dye was made from chemicals that were derived from coal tar and included the colors of synthesized mauve and aniline purple.
