Eugene Schueller is credited as the inventor of the first permanent and commercial hair dye in the year 1907. Schueller called the dye Oreal, and his product would later grow into the company known today as L'Oreal.
In 1904, Schueller graduated from a national chemical engineering school now known as Chimie Paris Tech. The first dyes that he invented were very limited in color, and were available only in dark golden and red shades for natural-colored hair. His original dyes were created with low amounts of peroxide. When peroxide mixes with other chemicals, it creates permanence of the new color.
