Chase Products created a hair spray-style product in 1948. Helene Curtis was the first company to use the term hairspray in 1950.
Aerosol cans were created during World War II. The cans were created for insecticide but it was soon realized that they could be used for beauty products. Helene Curtis, Inc. coined the phrase hairspray for its product Spray Net in 1950. Aqua Net was created soon after. There was a decline in sales during the 1970s due to the change in hairstyles and the fact the cans were not environmentally friendly. New standards have since been created, making the product safer.
