Does hairspray damage your hair?

Hairspray does not damage hair unless it is used in excess and the hair is not washed after use. Hairspray with alcohol as an ingredient can cause excessive drying of the hair when used, and environmentally conscious users should use hairspray that is marked "ozone friendly."

Although it is important to wash hair at the end of the day when using hairspray, too much washing can stress hair and cause damage. Because of this, hairspray use should be minimized to prevent over-washing. Sebum is the chemical produced by sebaceous glands, which helps lubricate hair. Washing too frequently impedes sebum build-up that protects hair from flaking, drying out or breaking.
