Why is my hamster losing its hair?

According to PetMD, some hamsters suffer from alopecia, which indicates hair loss. It is caused by a variety of factors, including parasites, poor nutrition, cage problems, lymphoma, kidney problems and thyroid imbalance.
PetMD explains that organisms such as ticks and mites sometimes attach themselves to hamsters. This leads to hair loss at the site of the bites, itching and red skin. An insufficient amount of protein or certain vitamins or minerals leads to alopecia over the entire body. Hamsters living together sometimes fight and pull hair off the tails and back legs of the others. Some hamsters rub their faces on metal feeders or burrow a great deal, which causes hair loss around the face.
