Which finger is the engagement ring worn on?

Traditionally the engagement finger is worn on the fourth finger on the left hand. In some parts of Europe it is worn on the fourth finger of the right hand.

Many people believe that there is a vein that runs from the fourth finger of the left hand directly to the heart. By wearing an engagement ring on this finger it signifies a long, happy and strong marriage. There is also a belief that only the wedding ring should be worn on the left hand so the engagement ring is worn on the right hand. In Roman times women were given two engagement rings; one was gold to be worn out in public and the other was iron that was worn while doing household chores.
