In Germany's bid to defeat the Soviet Union during World War II, Adolph Hitler viewed conquering the city of Stalingrad as a critical strategic point. Germany attempted to take Stalingrad, and the Soviet Union defeated the German forces, marking a critical turning point in the war.
Both the Soviet and German armies brought more than 1 million men into the Battle of Stalingrad, resulting in one of the bloodiest battles in history. The Soviet army was able to hold off the Germans successfully until winter set in, leading tens of thousands of men to die from starvation and temperatures below freezing.
