As of 2015, Ronald Defeo is serving six consecutive life sentences at Green Haven Correctional Facility in Beekman, New York. He received this sentence on November 21, 1975 when he was found guilty of second-degree murder for killing his family. Defeo's story is the basis for "The Amityville Horror."
Defeo was born in Brooklyn, New York on Sept. 26, 1951 and had an emotionally troubled childhood. He began working at his grandfather's car dealership when he was 18. In 1974, he threatened to kill his father after an argument over whether Ronald had robbed the dealership. On the morning of Nov. 13, 1974, DeFeo followed through with the threat and murdered his parents, brothers and sisters.
