When large amounts of ammonia are inhaled it causes a burning sensation in the throat, eyes, respiratory tract and nose, according to New York State Department of Health. Exposure to low amounts of ammonia from inhalation causes nose and throat irritation and coughing. Inhaling ammonia can also lead to damage to the lungs, blindness and sometimes even death.

At the first signs of ammonia poisoning, individuals should quickly move away from the contaminated air. Anyone exposed to ammonia should wash their skin and rinse out their eyes to lessen the chances of becoming ill. If individuals believe they have been exposed to large concentrations of ammonia, they should promptly seek medical attention.
