What happens with a blown eardrum?

When an eardrum is blown, it can cause pain and hearing loss. When this occurs, it is referred to as a ruptured eardrum, as stated by the National Institutes of Health's MedlinePlus.

A ruptured eardrum can be caused by a very loud noise, an infection or a foreign object being inserted into the ear. An injury to the ear can also cause it. Most often, ruptured eardrums heal on their own within a couple of months, notes WebMD. Treatment can include pain relieving medications and antibiotics if an infection is present. The eardrum needs to remain dry until it heals.
