What happens if you do not consume enough protein?

A diet with an inadequate amount of protein can lead to muscle loss, particularly if the problem persists over a long period, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Lack of protein can also diminish muscle growth when exercising.
The San Francisco Chronicle explains that protein supports a number of essential functions within the body, including the manufacture of immune cells and red blood cells. If the body does not have enough protein, it begins to break down muscle tissue to supply the amino acids it normally gets from the diet. Necessary amounts of daily protein intake vary by person and fitness goals, but a good rule of thumb is to consume 1.4 grams per kilogram of body weight.
