What happens if you fail the vision test when applying for a driver's license?

An applicant for a driver's license who fails his vision test cannot move on to the knowledge portion of the test and must schedule a new appointment. Before trying again, the applicant must visit an eye doctor and receive corrective lenses, such as glasses or contacts.

Depending on the severity of the vision impairment, some DMVs issue a restricted license – for example, the license may only allow the driver to operate a vehicle during the day. Usually the cutoff is 20/70 vision in one or both eyes and a continuous field of vision of at least 110 degrees and at least 35 degrees lateral to the midline of each side.
