Harlequin ducks are small sea ducks. Their name comes from the distinct coloration of the male, which has a blue-gray body with white stripes and crescents, white spots on the head and neck, chestnut-colored sides and a blue bill.
Harlequin ducks live in cold, northern climates in Canada, Alaska, Iceland, Greenland and Russia. They are considered endangered in northeastern North America. Harlequin ducks have densely packed feathers that keep them warm when diving in cold waters. They eat crustaceans, insects and small fish. They live in and along rivers during the summer but migrate to coastal regions during the winter.
