What is the Hawaii state flower?

The yellow hibiscus (Hibiscus brackenridgei A. Gray) is the Hawaiian state flower. The flower is known in the local language as "Pua Aloalo" or "Ma?o hau hele."

The yellow hibiscus was selected in 1988 to represent the state. Previously, any color or variety of hibiscus was the official Territorial Flower. As such, many older photos and postcards show the red hibiscus, or other colors, as the state flower.

Each island has its own designated "Island Flower." For example, Oahu’s flower is the yellow ilima. Kauai’s flower, the mokihana, isn't actually a flower but a berry. Maui’s flower is the pink lokelani.
