A head of garlic is a bulbous plant that contains multiple cloves. Each clove and the entire head of garlic are wrapped in a dry, papery skin, similar to the skin of onions. Individual cloves of garlic, with skin removed, are primarily used for cooking.
Garlic has been used for centuries as a culinary staple. It is sometimes eaten raw; however, it is quite pungent in its raw state. When cooked, garlic becomes more mild and sweet. Garlic is used in many cultures throughout the world, most often as a seasoning to enhance the flavor of other foods. It can be dried, baked, roasted and sautéed.
