Consuming more than five garlic cloves a day may cause flatulence, an upset stomach, heartburn and nausea. According to the American Cancer Society, eating large amounts of garlic may cause vomiting and irritation of the digestive tract as well.
Flatulence is caused by intestinal gas. It is a normal occurrence in healthy individuals. However, some foods, such as garlic, beans, or high-fiber foods, can cause excessive flatulence. To reduce the amount of intestinal gas, avoid increasing the amount of fiber in the diet and limit the common food culprits. Seeing a doctor is advisable when experiencing unusual flatulence accompanied by abdominal pain.
