Blood in the urine, which may be red, pink or brown in color, is a common symptom of a urinary tract infection, notes Mayo Clinic. The presence of blood in the urine is a specific symptom of cystitis, which is a type of UTI involving the bladder.
Other symptoms of UTI involving the bladder include pelvic pressure, discomfort in the lower abdominal region and painful urination, advises Mayo Clinic. Doctors usually prescribe antibiotics to treat simple UTIs. Medication to numb the bladder and urethra to relieve burning during urination are also common. Severe cases of UTI may require hospital admission and the administration of intravenous antibiotics.
