The Palmer Notation System is a method for numbering teeth that was created by Corydon Palmer, a practicing dentist from Ohio. This system was formerly known as the Zsigmondy system because a Hungarian dentist named Adolf Zsigmondy first conceived the idea in 1861.
The Palmer notation system, sometimes called the Military System, is one of three common methods used in dentistry. The other two methods for numbering teeth are called the Universal Numbering System and the ISO System. The ISO System was originated by the World Health Organization; this system is popular internationally, while the Universal Numbering System is largely popular in the United States.
