What is a pharmacy NCPDP number?

The NCPDP issues a six-digit Processor ID Number in order for health plans to process pharmacy claims electronically, according to the NCPDP's official website. Depending on the method health care providers select, they are assigned a unique BIN or an IIN.

Health plans that opt to use the magnetic strip on the back of the pharmacy benefit card as part of the transaction process are assigned an IIN, or Issue Identifier Number, while plans that opt not to use the strip receive a BIN, according to the NCPDP. The BIN field in the electronic transaction must include the processor BIN or the IIN in order for the pharmacy to submit the claim to the health plan for payment.
