The overall five-year survival rate for men diagnosed with the most common types of prostate cancer is 99 percent, according to WebMD. Prostate cancer is usually a slow-growing type of cancer. Only 1 out of every 36 men die from prostate cancer, as of 2015.

Most men are around age 70 when diagnosed with cancer of the prostate, reports WebMD. Many men die of other unrelated medical problems within five years of diagnosis. Still, a prostate cancer prognosis is particularly good when the cancer is localized to the prostate. Nearly 90 percent of all diagnoses are for cancer that remains localized.
