Is there a vaccination for shingles?

The vaccine Zostvax protects adults against the shingles virus, which is also called herpes zoster, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This one-time vaccine is available at participating pharmacies and doctor’s offices.

Although the Food and Drug Administration approved Zostvax for adults 50 or older, the CDC recommends shingles vaccinations for adults 60 and older. The vaccination is also recommend whether or not the individual contracted chickenpox or a shingles outbreak in the past. Conversely, individuals with cancer that affects the lymphatic system, a weakened immune system or an allergic reaction to gelatin should not be vaccinated, according to Mayo Clinic.
