An HDL of 40 to 49 mg/dL is described as a better level for men, according to Mayo Clinic. For women, 50 to 59 mg/dL is also better. Someone with a very high risk of heart disease should aim for an LDL cholesterol level below 70 mg/dL of blood. LDL from 100 to 129 mg/dL is described as near ideal for the average person.
