Where do hearts of palm come from?

According to Fruits & Veggies More Matters, the United States gets most of its hearts of palms from Costa Rica. They are taken from the inner cores of specific varieties of palm trees. Commercially, they are found fresh, canned and sealed in glass containers.
Hearts of palm are slightly sweet and soft, making them a great addition to salads and soups. Hearts of palm are nutritious, low fat and cholesterol-free, according to Fruits & Veggies More Matters. They are also a good source of vitamin C, zinc, vitamin B6, iron, phosphorous, vitamin B2, copper and potassium. Hearts of palm should be stored in the refrigerator.
