As of 2015, Hecht's stores have been converted to Macy's locations or closed, and the chain is considered defunct. Before the merger, the chain was limited to states along the East Coast and Pennsylvania.
The replacement of Hecht's stores with Macy's took place in 2005 and 2006. Prior to this changeover, Hecht's had 81 stores in total. In Delaware, New Jersey and most of Pennsylvania, their stores were called Strawbridge's. The first Hecht's store was founded in 1857. The chain was purchased by May Department Stores in 1959, which was in turn purchased by Federated Department Stores in 2005, the parent company of Macy's.
