Macy’s department store was first founded in 1858. At the time, it was located between 14th street and 6th avenue in New York City as a small dry goods store.
Macy’s was founded by Rowland Hussey Macy. He attempted other retail ventures first, but they failed. It wasn’t until he was 36 when he opened R.H. Macy & Co. Due to this history as a sailor, he chose the red star symbol, which is still Macy’s symbol today. On the first day of business, he made $11.06. By the end of the first year, he was already considered successful, having made $90,000. It became a full-sized department store in 1877.
