Sam Walton founded the first Wal-Mart store in Rogers, Arkansas, in 1962. His family expanded the chain to 24 stores by 1967, and the business became incorporated in 1969. The company became publicly traded in 1970, and stores opened around the United States throughout the following decade.
The company expanded its brand by opening the first Sam's Club in 1983 in Midwest City, Oklahoma. Wal-Mart entered the international market in 1991 by opening a Sam's Club in Mexico City. The company continued worldwide expansion by opening stores in China in 1996 and in the United Kingdom in 1999. As 2015, the corporation operates more than 11,000 stores.
