Japan is part of both the northern and eastern hemispheres. It is situated off the eastern coast of Asia to the east of the Korean Peninsula.
Japan comprises a total area of 145,925 square miles, including 6,852 islands. In 2012, its population was estimated to be over 126 million people. Japan is considered to be a stratovolcanic archipelago. It is geographically located within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for high tectonic activity and subsequent volcanic activity and earthquakes. About 90 percent of the world's earthquakes take place in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Japan has the highest natural disaster risk of all developed nations.
