Hemorrhoid surgery can be painful, especially after the anesthesia from the surgery has worn off, according to WebMD. However, the after-surgery experience can vary depending on which type of surgery the patient undergoes.
The surgical procedure to remove hemorrhoids is called a hemorrhoidectomy, states WebMD. This type of surgery is typically an outpatient procedure, and the surgeon can use a knife, an electric tool or a laser to remvoe the hemorrhoid. The Procedure for Prolapse and Hemorrhoids, or PPH, is a less-invasive type of surgery that uses staples to cut the blood supply to hemorrhoids. Without blood, the hemorrhoids eventually shrivel and die. This procedure is less painful than a hemorrhoidectomy, but individuals are more likely to experience symptoms again.
