What is a henna tattoo?

A henna tattoo is a form of temporary skin art made from a paste derived from the leaves of the henna plant. It is applied to the skin using a brush. The dye penetrates and stains the top layers of skin but typically disappears completely in one to two weeks.

Henna is a translucent dye that blends with the wearer's natural skin tone, so henna tattoos, even those created from a single batch of henna, appear in different colors on different people. Tattoo colors range from pale peach to dark maroon. Some appear yellow, while others are reddish or brown.
